U.S. futures are looking slightly lower for a 3rd straight morning after rebounding and paring losses Monday/rising after the close last night following news that Canada joined Mexico in supporting their borders to the U.S. by deploying 10,000 troops, appeasing the U.S. for the time being as the tariffs imposed this past weekend by President Trump (25% each to Mexico and Canada) have been paused by 30-days. In addition, Canada said it is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar, will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, and launch a Canada- U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering. However, U.S. futures dipped overnight after China imposed targeted tariffs on American imports and put several U.S. companies, including Google, on notice for possible sanctions, in a measured response to the sweeping duties on Chinese imports imposed by President Donald Trump. China’s additional tariffs are estimated to about $20 billion of annual imports, compared with the $450 billion worth of Chinese goods subject to the Trump tariff according to UK based research firm Capital Economics. China’s new measures include a 15% levy on U.S. coal and LNG and 10% for crude oil, farm equipment and a small number of trucks as well as big-engine sedans shipped to China from the U.S. China said it was starting an anti-monopoly investigation into Alphabet Inc’s Google and put both PVH and biotechnology company Illumina on a list for potential sanctions. In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index gained 278 points to 38,798, the Shanghai Index remained closed, and the Hang Seng Index jumped 572 points to 20,789. In Europe, the German DAX is up 13 points to 21,441, while the FTSE 100 is down -10 points to 8,572. A busy day of earnings including Merck, Pepsi this morning and Alphabet, AMD, Amgen, and Chipotle tonight. Also a busy day of economic data with Factory Orders, Durable Goods and the first read of jobs this week with JOLTs. Treasury yields are higher, while the dollar, gold and Bitcoin prices all slip along with oil prices.
