U.S. stock futures are looking higher by 0.4% or 16 points to 4,175 level as major averages pared losses into the close last night as Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said late Tuesday, she is neither predicting nor recommending that the Federal Reserve raise interest rates as a result of President Biden’s spending plans, walking back her comments earlier in the day that rates might need to rise to keep the economy from overheating. In Asian markets, The Nikkei and Shanghai Index remained closed, while the Hang Seng Index fell -139 points to 28,417. In Europe, the German DAX jumps about 200 points to move back above the 15,000 level, while the FTSE 100 is higher by roughly 80 points to trade just above 7,000. Stocks finished mostly lower on Tuesday, as the Dow eked a small gain late day, though the Nasdaq Composite fell just under 2% with technology stocks leading the way lower as investors digested commentary from Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen around the possibility of higher interest rates. Stocks pared losses into the close, as the S&P 500 pulled back off its recent all-time highs. Major averages had opened lower, losing steam throughout the morning before former Fed Chairperson, and now Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said she thought interest rates in the U.S. might need to rise in order to prevent an economic overheating during the recovery out of the pandemic, which accelerated the market selling pressure. The comments are a stark contrast to several Fed speakers over the last few weeks including current Fed Chairman Jerome Powell. Today markets brace for another heavy day of earnings.
